Reduce screen time: A practical plan for everyday life
Start with one situation you want to change. Identify which app distracts you, when it happens and what you would rather do. After a week, review what works for you.
Look at the kind of screen time
Navigation, a conversation with a friend and aimless scrolling serve different purposes. A single total does not tell you which habits you want to change. Review your apps in iPhone Screen Time and note the ones you often open without a purpose.
Choose a specific goal: “Instagram stays closed during my first study session” is easier to act on than “I will use my phone less.”
A week to experiment
- Day 1 — Observe: note two situations when you pick up your phone without planning to.
- Day 2 — Choose one app: select the distraction you want to address first.
- Day 3 — Protect a period: plan a manageable focused session, such as 25 minutes. Adjust the duration to your day.
- Day 4 — Prepare your surroundings: put your phone out of reach when you do not need it. Keep necessary work tools available.
- Day 5 — Plan your return: decide when to take an intentional break with the app.
- Day 6 — Repeat: practise the same rule rather than adding several new ones.
- Day 7 — Review: compare similar days. What interrupted you less? Which rule felt impractical?
Where an app blocker can fit
If you often open an app automatically, try restricting it during focused time. Doplock combines an iPhone app with an NFC card: choose the apps to block, then use the card when you decide to unlock.
For example, leave the card in the hallway while working at your desk. Decide whether the extra step fits your routine. Read how the NFC Focus Card works or compare ways to block iPhone apps.
Measure what matters to you
Your goal might be an uninterrupted study session or dinner without scrolling. Alongside your screen-time total, note whether you changed that particular situation. A smaller number does not describe an entire day.
Set realistic expectations
This plan is an experiment, with no guaranteed time saving or required target. Keep useful rules and adjust the rest. Before using Doplock, check the current product and device information.
Check your device, card and activation
The workflow described here requires an NFC-capable iPhone. Doplock’s App Store listing currently requires iOS 18.0 or later (checked on 31 October 2026). A listing for other Apple devices does not automatically confirm support for NFC card unlocking on those devices. Android is not currently offered as a supported product.
The Focus Card is a physical NFC card with an activation code included. The separately purchased code is digital and does not replace a card: you need your own compatible NFC card. Confirm compatibility before buying. See the Doplock FAQ for more answers and compare the card and code in the shop.
